Community Advocates Board
Developed in 1984, the CAB is a formally constituted body of the corporation. Composed of individuals who receive support services from the agency it is designed to provide both the Board of Directors and agency administration with recommendations for policy and service development. The CAB embodies the principle of highly valuing individual participation in the decision-making processes that effect agency services and operations. In order to facilitate its ability to impact the agency, members of the Board of Directors and STEP staff are supporters and assistants for the group, as well as liaisons back to their respective bodies.
The C.A.B. is going to Atlanta!
11 C.A.B. members and four staff facilitators will be traveling to Atlanta, Georgia this May 25-28 to participate in the biannual National Self Advocacy Conference, hosted by the Southern Collaborative on Self Determination along with Self-Advocates Becoming Empowered (SABE). The theme of the conference is: "We Had a Dream, Now We Have the Power." Atlanta was chosen as host city this year because we are leaders in the fight for the civil rights of people with disabilities, just as Martin Luther King, Jr., Atlanta's greatest son, was the leader in the Civil Rights Movement.
Of course, there will be plenty of time for sightseeing and other fun activities as well, including a tour of the Martin Luther King Center, the Carter Center, The World of Coke museum, The Georgia Aquarium, Six Flags over Georgia and many other activities. C.A.B. members are currently gearing up for their annual fundraising drive, the Walk and Roll, along the Charles River on April 29th. This year most donations will be going towards helping the individuals traveling to Atlanta to keep costs down. Be on the lookout for C.A.B. members with pledge sheets, and please do whatever you can to support these dedicated self-advocates in furthering their extremely worthy cause.
